The Brain Matrix: A Paradigm Shift to Accelerate SDG

By: KJ Lavan

A paradigm shift in technologies & investment opportunities is needed to address brain rigidity which includes the convergence of mental health, organizational development, education, neurology—we need a fresh approach to technologies and investing. We need a new investment opportunity: Brain Matrix.

The escalating brain health crisis globally - severe social, physical, & economic consequences - were already escalating before the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that approximately 450 million individuals were suffering from mental health conditions, marking mental health disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability. Estimates by The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) put the consequences of mental ill health cost up to 4% of GDP worldwide.

Our social structure continues to be plagued by brain rigidity from dementia & mental health disorders, learning disabilities to the impact of the COVID pandemic & disparities in educational health care access.

As well, some of the most persistent social issues—crime, homelessness, death by hopelessness—will be impossible to solve without addressing the root causes in addition to the treatment & support of individuals with brain disorders and vulnerabilities. Without addressing brain health illnesses, our communities & workplaces will continue to be increasingly challenged to maintain sustainability economically & socially.

At the same time, deeply comprehending the human brain will make new modalities for medical treatment possible. This includes spinal and brain injury therapy as well as chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Neuroscience posits helping patients change behaviors by understanding the brain. This invites the suggestion that cultivating well-being through transforming our mind will change the brain in ways that impact the body. This may have beneficial consequences for our physical health.

The manifestation of resilience at the community, organizational, & societal levels is promising. Through better understanding of mental processes such as creativity, innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship, thriving is attainable for all, including the most vulnerable.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to create new, disruptive technologies & practices as it relates to the aforementioned challenges & opportunities in a timely manner. What is needed is an approach which is cross-functional, multi-disciplinary, & a new agency optimized for innovation. All of these promote new investment, governance, & altruistic leadership.

The Brain Matrix

The Brain Matrix is defined as diverse neuroscience-inspired technologies & practices addressing the convergence of mental health, education, organizational development, neurology & positive psychology - resilience, happiness, productivity, creativity. It constitutes a promising, new opportunity for investment impact with regard to corporate social responsibility.

The case for Brain Matrix highlights a new investment category which places a premium on technological healthcare innovations & practices that improve brain health & skills.
